, South Dakota, USA. It shows a beautiful lively view of the unveiling of the Thomas
J
Grier Monument in about 1915. So it is more than one HUNDRED and ten years
OLD
. Thomas
Johnston
Grier (1850-1914) was
superintendent of the
Homestake Mining Company. He would serve in this position for 30 years, handling a mine that owned more than million worth of property at the time and
produced more than million in gold, as well as supervising 2,500 employees and a 5,000 monthly payroll for these employees. He was also
instrumental in different community buildings and area infrastructure, including the water system that served the city of Lead and the mine, as well as the
creation of the Spearfish hydro-electric plant, several mills and hoists, and the Homestake Opera House and Recreation Center. He was also president of the
First National Bank of Lead City and vice-president of the First National at Deadwood.
The sculpture was made by
Allen George Newman (1875-1940).
This
postcard is also in the
collection of the
South Dakota
State Historical Society - Archives Department.

box. However creases on the right corners they do not affect the picture (see scan) and it is still a great collectable. Condition: good.
